Rustic Window Frames – The 6 Most Popular Styles

Rustic window frames are one of the easiest ways to get a new look for your space. They work well in children’s rooms, as they are a piece of childhood nostalgia. They work well in small rooms, and some can even be turned into a headboard for your bed.

Old window frames make a cost-effective way to add color to your home and create a unique focal point.

So if you want to spruce up your home but have a tight budget, then old window frames can be the perfect way to create a quick and cost-effective home decor project.

#1 - RUSTIC FOUR (4) PANE WINDOW FRAME

A very common design used throughout the United States, the four-pane rustic window frame is a classic choice and can be used to enhance many rooms in your home. This design has clean lines and simple features. It will make any room look more modern and classy while still maintaining a traditional feel. This design is much like the cathedral window frame, requiring measurements and cutting for its various parts. A drill is required for assembly, and professionals at your local home improvement store can help you complete this look based on your specific needs. The four-pane rustic window frame comprises two different boards (one for top and bottom) and two slightly thinner boards (for the sides). These will be assembled with nails. Two hinges should be attached to the backboard so that it will swing open. A wider piece of wood can be used as a backboard behind these openings for more support.

#2 - RUSTIC ARCHED WINDOW FRAMES

These are the most basic of all rustic window frames. They are made, usually by attaching boards or planks to form a complete frame. This style needs only needs to be stained, oiled, and varnished for finishing touches. A simple design with clean lines makes this an easy and cost-effective window frame.

These rustic window frames can be made to any size required, whether it is large or small. They are easy to construct and require no special tools. These window frames are designed using aged wood planks with rusty nails driven through them. While making these rustic wooden window frames, many rotten or discarded pieces of wood are also used to make the design look even more rustic.

#3 - RUSTIC CATHEDRAL WINDOW FRAMES

A much fancier design than the arched window frame, this style is an excellent choice for many different rooms in the house. It is very pretentious and can be used to add flair to any room. While this look is not necessary for every room, it does lend itself well to areas such as the living room, dining room, and bedrooms.A drill is recommended for assembly, and the professionals at your local hardware store can assist you if necessary. To make this style of the rustic window frame, a board is needed for the top and bottom sections. This type has a picture frame design. The two middle sections will have hinges installed in them so that they can open up. A wide piece of wood is required for the backside, with its measurements dependent on your specific needs.

#4 - RUSTIC WINDOW FRAMES WITH ARROWS

This design of rustic window frame is very sleek and modern, making it stand out in any room where it’s used. These frames are usually made with stained wood planks that have an arrow cut into them. The arrow is often painted brown or some other dark color that contrasts with the wood. These rustic window frames are made much the same way as the previous designs, requiring measurements and cutting. The difference is that instead of nails, screws are used to hold everything together. This design can be completed by even amateur at-home improvement projects, especially if you purchase pre-assembled parts to use.

#5 - RUSTIC WINDOW FRAMES WITH WREATHS

Another incredibly beautiful design can be completed by an expert or novice at home improvement projects. These rustic window frames come in two pieces, with a large wreath cut out of the center on both sides. The wreath is usually created from wood and painted green (with a red bow). Wood is typically used to construct these frames. While the wreath design makes this rustic window frame look very traditional, the panels are thicker and more modern. They have a flat finish on one side and a rough finish on the other so that it can match your existing décor. A board should be purchased for the back, and hinges should be used to create the swinging panels.

#6 - RUSTIC WINDOW FRAMES WITH MIRRORS

This rustic window frame is one of the most beautiful designs available on the market today. They are made up of three sets of two panes that open like a pair of French doors. The entire frame is made of wood (usually pine) and can be stained or painted to match your existing décor. This rustic window frame will require professional assistance to be completed correctly by those who have experience with such projects. These are very complex, and the panels should swing open on hinges for ease of use.

There are many different ways to attach a window to a wall but I feel D-rings and picture hanger hooks are the best. They come in many sizes and give you the exact amount of weight they support. Simply attach the D-rings to the back of the window and attach the picture hanger hooks to the wall. Use your tape measure and level to ensure proper installation.

HOW DO I MAKE A WINDOW FRAME LOOK RUSTIC?

To make your window frame look rustic, you want to make it look old, used, distressed and weathered. Here are a few DIY tricks you can use to make your window look the way you want it to.

    • Glue & Paint – Before painting your window, try adding some glue as a base coat. When the glue dries enough to form a thin skin, that’s when you can add your paint top coat. As the glue dries, it will form a crackle effect.
    • Paint & Vinegar – After you have painted your window and let it dry, use a spray bottle with vinegar and spray down the paint in the areas you want to distress. Use some old rags to rub away the paint.
    • Paint & Sandpaper – Once dry, sand down your paint using a fine-grit sandpaper, sanding block or palm sander.
    • Bang it up – In order to add age to your wood, beat it up a little. Dents, nicks and gouges add character.

WHAT ELSE CAN I USE OLD WINDOW FRAMES FOR?

Old Windows Frames can be used for many things including displaying family photos and holding special holiday cards. They can be repurposed to make serving trays, chalkboards, coffee table tops, coat racks and so much more. Your only limited to your imagination so let it loose.

Rustic Coat Racks – How To Mount in 5 Simple Steps

If your tired of seeing your coats, hats, keys and other daily essentials all over the place, then consider wall mounted rustic coat racks to help you get more organized. No longer will you need to shove coats into closets or pick them off the floor.

Although rustic coat racks are a great way to organize and declutter your entrance way, they do have to be installed properly. Improper installation can lead to unwanted headaches.

Below I have detailed 4 important things to consider before you start. Installation is a straight forward process and with proper consideration should not take more then 20 minutes to install your coat rack.

STEP 1

DECIDE ON PLACEMENT

Your coat rack should be installed in a place where it is easy for your children and family to hang their coats up. If you don’t like placing the rack at the back of your front door, then consider installing it in the hallway instead. Placing a coat rack near the main entrance will make it easier for your guests to help themselves in hanging their coats when they visit.

STEP 2

DETERMINE THE BEST FASTENERS TO USE FOR YOUR WALL

Physically mounting your coat rack to the wall is pretty easy and only takes a few minutes of your time. What’s important to know though is “how are you going to mount it to the wall?” You want your coat rack to have strength to support all the weight of those heavy coats in the winter time.

Using your stud finder, locate the studs behind your drywall. Screwing your coat rack into a stud is the best option because the screw is going into wood behind the wall. This will give alot of strength. If screwing into wood is not an option then your second choice is going to have to be to secure it to the drywall.  When securing to sheetrock, drywall anchors and toggle bolts work really well and can support a good amount of weight.

Tools Needed:

  • Stud Finder

STEP 3

MEASURE AND MARK THE HEIGHT YOU WANT TO HANG THE RACK

Accessibility is the most important factor to consider when it comes to deciding on how high your coat rack should be. The height should be enough for everyone to store and remove their coats as they please.

Five feet from the floor is the ideal placement of a wall rack. It is the most suitable height to ensure it is accessible for both children and adults. If you have smaller children, you can also place a stool for them to step on to ensure that they can access the rack as well.

STEP 4

LEVEL AND MARK THE HOLES

During installation, leveling your coat rack is crucial and the slightest difference will be noticeable from across the room. Place your coat rack against the wall to get an idea of how its going to look before actually screwing it down and mark the holes/rack placement with your pencil.

Tools Needed:

  • Level
  • Tape Measure
  • Pencil

STEP 5

MOUNT YOUR COAT RACK

Now that all your prep work is done, its time to physically mount your coat rack to the wall using your drill. If you are attaching to studs, place the rack up to your markings and use the drill to screw in the 3″ screws to the wall.

Tools Needed:

  • Drill
  • Screwdriver Bit
  • 3″ Screws (Studs) or Toggle Bolts (No Studs)

Rustic Vases – The 3 Best Ways To Use Them in Your Home

If you want to decorate your room but are unsure of where to start, try incorporating beautiful rustic vases into your decor. Vases are one of my favorite ways to add color and texture to a room at a low cost. They will also add charm and character while completely changing the atmosphere of your room.

Here are The Three (3) Best Ways to Decorate Using Rustic Vases:

1. FLOWER ARRANGEMENTS

Arranging fresh-cut flowers in your rustic vase is one of the ways to incorporate this decor item into your home. Placing a vase full of fresh-cut flowers is the best thing that you can do to your home because flowers are visually appealing and their amazing smell can give fresh vitality to your whole interior.

A beautiful flower arrangement will not only enhance your home’s aesthetic appeal because it can also support the physical and mental health of its dwellers. Anxiety and depression can lead to serious physical ailments, that’s why it’s important to always de-stress. Arranging flowers in a vase is a great activity that can help in preventing or reducing anxiety and depression.

Having flowers in your home can boost happiness and increase the emotional connection between you and your family. It is a great decor idea that everyone in your family can benefit from.

TIPS FOR USING CUT FLOWERS:

  • Fill your vase ¾ with warm water. Flowers absorb water best between 100 F and 110 degrees F.
  • Cut the stems on an angle to ensure they don’t sit flat against the bottom of the vase and are still able to absorb water.
  • Remove any dead leaves or petals from the stem that will be under water to avoid them from rotting and smelling.
  • Change the water every other day to increase the lifespan of the flowers

2. FLOWER ALTERNATIVES

The wonderful thing about rustic vases is that they are so versatile and can be used for displaying cut flowers as well as other alternatives.

  • Twigs and branches are one of the most popular alternatives and they’re not only strikingly beautiful, but they’re also abundant in nature which means that you can forage them for free.
  • Sand, seashells, and river rocks are also great alternatives because these can evoke a relaxing environment that will always remind you of that fun summer vacation that you once had.

3. EMPTY VASES

If you don’t have time to decorate your vase or if you prefer a simpler style, then you can decorate the rustic vase as it is.

Rustic vases especially those with beautiful prints or patterns can be a centerpiece on their own. It can serve as a focal point where you can create the rest of your design.

For a more impactful decor, place your rustic vase beside a stack of books, plants, or any decorative figure that needs more emphasis in order to stand out.
